Eighteen miles of paved riverfront trail at one edge of the neighbourhood, seven more running west along Four Mile Run, and four parks inside the grid itself.

This one covers what is within walking, riding and driving distance of one, written to a single rule: every venue below was checked in August 2026 against the operator's own site or the managing agency's own page, and anything that could not be confirmed open was left out. That removed names older lists still carry — a Mount Vernon Avenue pizzeria, a sushi restaurant whose own site says it closed, a sixteen-screen cinema demolished in 2021. Public land dominates below for the same reason: trails do not quietly close.
Two paved trails do the heavy lifting. The Mount Vernon Trail is an 18-mile paved multi-use path run by the National Park Service along the George Washington Memorial Parkway, from the Mount Vernon estate at its southern end to Theodore Roosevelt Island at its northern one — the shoreline route. The Four Mile Run Trail runs roughly 7 miles from Benjamin Banneker Park in Falls Church southeast to a junction with the Mount Vernon Trail near Reagan National Airport, passing under I-395 and meeting the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail near Shirlington. Del Ray sits between them. The join is at the northern edge, where Mount Vernon and Commonwealth Avenues reach Four Mile Run, and eastward through Potomac Yard Park, whose promenade forms a continuous off-street route from Braddock Road north to Four Mile Run. From most front doors here you are on car-free pavement within a few blocks.
Four Mile Run Park, at 3700 Commonwealth Avenue and 4131 Mount Vernon Avenue, is the largest and anchors the northern edge. The City's listing, updated July 2026, carries soccer and playing fields used by Alexandria City High School, Bishop Ireton and adult and youth leagues, basketball, a playground, picnic areas, an unfenced dog area, bird watching along the run, a farmers market and a kayak launch; sunrise to sunset. Published acreages for it disagree across sources, so none is given here. Eugene Simpson Stadium Park, 426 East Monroe Avenue, is 9.94 acres, open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.: four pickleball and two tennis courts, basketball, diamond fields, playground, community garden, public art, and the fenced, lighted dog area. Diamond-field and dog-park renovations were underway in August 2026. Monticello Park, 320 Beverley Drive, is 6.25 acres of wooded ravine with a stream through it — the birding site, 124 species documented, the spring warbler migration running through late April and May. Potomac Yard Park, 2501 Potomac Avenue, runs about 24 acres east of Route 1: a 36-jet interactive fountain on seasonal hours, tennis, pickleball, basketball and volleyball, playgrounds, a performance space, promenade and courts lit to 10 p.m.
Potomac Yard Center, along Richmond Highway just east of the neighbourhood, is the big-format shopping. Confirmed trading in August 2026: Best Buy at 3401 Richmond Highway and Barnes & Noble at 3651, both checked against the retailers' own store locators, plus Target, Old Navy, PetSmart, Staples, Total Wine & More and Navy Federal on the centre's own directory. One correction worth carrying — the Regal Potomac Yard 16 that still appears on older tenant lists closed in March 2020 and was demolished in March 2021. There is no cinema at Potomac Yard. The Village at Shirlington, 2700 South Quincy Street in Arlington, is the walkable counterpart: a promenade of more than fifteen shops and over twenty restaurants, with a public library branch, an AMC cinema and Cheesetique's second location. Old Town's King Street, south past Braddock Road, holds the independent and specialist retail and runs down to the river.
Racquet sport is the easiest thing to arrange: four pickleball and two tennis courts at Simpson Stadium Park inside the neighbourhood, and tennis, pickleball, basketball and volleyball at Potomac Yard Park, lit to 10 p.m. For golf, the closest confirmed public course is Pinecrest Golf Course, 6600 Little River Turnpike, run by the Fairfax County Park Authority — nine holes, executive, par 35 at 2,462 yards, with clubhouse, pro shop, snack bar and club, riding-cart and pull-cart rental; dawn to dusk, closed Thursdays until 10 a.m. for maintenance. Water access from the neighbourhood itself is the kayak launch at Four Mile Run Park. Two absences here are deliberate. Northern Virginia's private membership golf and country clubs are genuinely close, but neither of the two nearest could be confirmed through its own website in August 2026, so neither is named — confirm membership terms with the club directly. No equestrian facility near enough to be useful could be confirmed, so none is claimed.
Mount Vernon Avenue turns over, so this list is short and each entry was checked against the business's own site. Evening Star Cafe, 2000 Mount Vernon Avenue, was posting current hours and a seasonal American menu sourced partly from its rooftop garden, with a wine list the restaurant puts near 1,500 labels and an outdoor Tex-Mex barbecue concept beside it. Cheesetique, 2411 Mount Vernon Avenue, remains the original of its two locations. Junction Bakery, 1508 Mount Vernon Avenue, was taking orders as a bistro, bar and bakery. Los Tios Grill, 2615 Mount Vernon Avenue, posts full daily hours. St. Elmo's Coffee Pub, 2300 Mount Vernon Avenue, is listed as current by its operator. Two cultural anchors: the Torpedo Factory Art Center, 105 North Union Street on the Old Town waterfront, free and open to the public since 1974, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with ten partner galleries including The Art League, Target Gallery, Multiple Exposures and Scope; and Signature Theatre, 4200 Campbell Avenue in Shirlington, programming a 2026 season. Check any restaurant before building an evening around it.
Most of it is a walk. Mount Vernon Avenue is the spine and carries the dining; Commonwealth Avenue is the parallel run north to Four Mile Run Park. Monticello Park is west, off Beverley Drive beyond Russell Road. Potomac Yard Park is east across Route 1, and it is the crossing that turns a walk into a ride: from its promenade you are on continuous off-street pavement to Four Mile Run and the Mount Vernon Trail. Old Town, the Torpedo Factory and King Street lie south past Braddock Road — walkable from the southern blocks, an easy ride from anywhere on the grid. Shirlington is west across I-395 by car, or by the Four Mile Run and W&OD connection. Pinecrest is the outlier: west on Duke Street and Little River Turnpike, past the Beltway.
