Our Potomac community guide covers what governs a lot here — the zone letter, the sewer category, the environmental reviews. This is the other half: what is here to use. Everything below was checked in August 2026 against the operator's own source — the National Park Service, Montgomery Parks, the landlord's leasing directory, the club, the restaurant's own hours page. Anything that could not be confirmed open was left out rather than guessed at, and the notable omissions are named at the end. The most durable material is the public land, because it does not change hands.
Potomac's southern boundary is the C&O Canal National Historical Park, whose towpath runs 184.5 miles from Georgetown to Cumberland — one of the longest biking trails in the continental US, per the Park Service, which also counts about 14 miles of trail in the Great Falls area, the Billy Goat among them. Northwest of the village, Blockhouse Point Conservation Park covers roughly 630 acres at 14750 River Road: upland and floodplain forest, river-rock outcrops, wetlands, views down to the river and canal, and the earthwork ruins of a Union outpost that guarded the crossing. It is open to hikers and to horses — one of the county's genuine equestrian trail parks. Running into it is the Muddy Branch Greenway Trail, nine miles of natural surface from Darnestown Road in Gaithersburg south to Blockhouse Point, where a bridge carries you to Pennyfield Lock and the towpath. That connection is why the two work as one long day rather than two short ones.
At 7400 Tuckerman Lane, Cabin John Regional Park is listed by Montgomery Parks at about 528 acres, and it is where the county put its equipment: a fully enclosed ice rink that runs through the summer, the Pauline Betz Addie Tennis Center with indoor and lighted outdoor courts, the miniature train, the Adventure Playground, a dog park with separate small- and large-dog sides, and eleven picnic shelters plus a group area. The Robert C. McDonell Campground holds seven walk-in campsites, which is unusual this close to the Beltway. Trails run over five miles — roughly four natural surface, just under two paved — and the Cabin John Stream Valley Trail is the popular one, from Goya Drive south along the creek. Locust Grove Nature Center at 7777 Democracy Boulevard opens 10 to 4 on Saturday and Sunday, June through August. One live caveat: the Westlake Drive lot near the dog park has been under construction since 19 January, scheduled through summer 2026.
Potomac Village, where Falls Road (MD 189) meets River Road (MD 190), is neighbourhood-scale and anchored by the Giant Food at 9812 Falls Road. Cabin John Village at 7919 Tuckerman Lane is the redeveloped centre, owned by EDENS, whose current leasing directory lists Giant Food, CVS Pharmacy in 15,144 square feet, Bank of America, Bluemercury, Bethesda Bagels, Boulangerie Christophe, Apricot Lane Boutique, Aspire PT & Wellness and Bethesda Pediatrics; several units are marked available, so the roster moves. Park Potomac, off Montrose Road at I-270, is the mixed-use block of shops, offices and restaurants, with two hours' free parking on weekdays and three after 6 p.m. and at weekends. For flagship retail the destination is Westfield Montgomery, 7101 Democracy Boulevard in Bethesda: more than 1.2 million square feet anchored by Macy's and Nordstrom, with Apple, Zara, lululemon, Sephora, Tory Burch and Arc'teryx among the specialty tenants, and a 16-screen AMC. Confirm a single store before making the trip; mall directories turn over.
Falls Road Golf Course at 10800 Falls Road is the public option — 18 holes on 150 acres of former farmland a mile north of the village, opened in 1961 as the first Montgomery County Golf course, with four tee sets, a parkland front nine, a tree-lined back nine and a 22-stall lighted driving range. Sources disagree on the card, at par 70 to 71 and roughly 6,100 to 6,300 yards from the back tees, so confirm with the pro shop on 301-299-5156. TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, 10000 Oaklyn Drive, is private, with an 18-hole championship course renovated by PGA TOUR Design Services in 2008; it hosted the Quicken Loans National in 2017 and 2018 and the Wells Fargo Championship in 2022. Congressional Country Club at 8500 River Road was confirmed operating on the club's own site in August 2026 — also private. Membership requirements are worth knowing up front rather than at the gate.
Glenstone, at 12100 Glen Road, is the cultural anchor — a museum set in landscape, with pavilions, a woodland trail, outdoor sculpture including Richard Serra and Andy Goldsworthy, a café and a bookstore. Admission is always free, but timed tickets are required and release on the first of each month at 10 a.m. for that month and the next. As of August 2026 it opens Thursday to Sunday, 10 to 5, with Saturdays extended to 8 p.m. from 23 May to 5 September and last admission at 3.15 p.m.; visitors must be 12 or over, and parking is free. Old Angler's Inn, 10801 MacArthur Boulevard, has stood beside the canal since 1860 and has been in the Reges family for close to seventy years; its own site lists service Wednesday to Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday, reservations on 301-365-2425. MoCo's Founding Farmers, 12505 Park Potomac Avenue, serves breakfast through dinner daily.
Two state roads do nearly all the work. Falls Road (MD 189) runs north past the golf course and south toward MacArthur Boulevard; River Road (MD 190) runs east toward Congressional and Bethesda and northwest toward Blockhouse Point. From Potomac Village, Great Falls Tavern at 11710 MacArthur Boulevard is a few miles by Falls Road then MacArthur, and Old Angler's Inn is about a mile further downstream on the same road — the Anglers parking area for Billy Goat Section B sits directly opposite, which is why lunch on that patio after a hike is a standing local habit. Glenstone is a short run north on Glen Road. Cabin John Village and Cabin John Regional Park are both reached by Seven Locks Road and Tuckerman Lane, four or so miles southeast, with Westfield Montgomery a little further on via Democracy Boulevard. Park Potomac is northeast at Montrose Road and I-270. Little of this is walkable — lots are large and sidewalks intermittent — so drive, then walk once parked. As of August 2026.
