Arlington's community guide covers what constrains a lot here — zoning, overlays, the EHO litigation. This is the other half: what is on the ground to use. Every venue below was checked against its own site or a current source in August 2026, and anything that would not confirm was left out rather than guessed. The parks and trails lead, because public land does not close.
Start with what cannot be taken off the map. Arlington County held the number seven spot in the Trust for Public Land's 2026 ParkScore, its eleventh consecutive year in the top ten, and the county counts 924 acres of open space and more than 750,000 trees, 119,000 of them publicly owned. The set pieces are federal. Theodore Roosevelt Island is an 88.5-acre wooded island in the Potomac reached only by footbridge from the Virginia bank, with roughly two miles of trail split between the Swamp, Woods and Upland routes; the National Park Service runs it as part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Arlington National Cemetery covers 639 acres with about 400,000 interred, open daily 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. as of August 2026 — the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been under continuous guard since July 2, 1937. NOVA Parks holds Potomac Overlook Regional Park, 67 acres at 2845 N. Marcey Road, where the James I. Mayer Center for Environmental Education occupies a 1912 house; the nature center runs Tuesday through Saturday 10 to 5 and Sunday 1 to 5, closed Mondays.
Two long-distance trails meet here and neither is a neighborhood path. The Washington & Old Dominion Trail begins at mile zero in Shirlington and runs 45 paved miles west to Purcellville in Loudoun County; NOVA Parks posts hours of 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, year-round, along the full length. Riders should know that a 32-mile gravel equestrian trail runs alongside the paved surface for much of that distance — the practical horse route in Northern Virginia. As of August 2026 NOVA Parks was posting construction and tree-work alerts on the W&OD running through spring 2028, so check the alert page before committing to a long ride. The Mount Vernon Trail is the other: 18 paved miles from George Washington's Mount Vernon estate north along the Potomac to its terminus at Theodore Roosevelt Island, also Park Service. It ties into the Potomac Heritage, Custis, Rock Creek, Four Mile Run and Woodrow Wilson Bridge trails, which is how a ride starting in Arlington reaches Georgetown, Alexandria or the Maryland side without a car.
Get the names right first. Market Common Clarendon now trades as The Crossing Clarendon, a Regency Centers property at 2800 Clarendon Boulevard, and Pentagon Row is now Westpost at National Landing under Federal Realty. Confirmed at The Crossing in August 2026: Whole Foods as the grocery, Apple at 2700 Clarendon Boulevard, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, Ethan Allen, The Container Store, Barnes & Noble, Sephora, Bluemercury, Warby Parker and lululemon, with Life Time and SoulCycle on the fitness side. The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City is the enclosed mall — 927,462 square feet over four floors, opened October 5, 1989, 140-plus stores, anchored by Nordstrom and Macy's, both confirmed trading in August 2026, with a Macy's Backstage in the same building. It connects directly to Pentagon City station on the Blue and Yellow lines, and the Ritz-Carlton is attached. Ballston Quarter is the third: Punch Bowl Social is open at 4238 Wilson Boulevard, a 24,000-square-foot room with bowling, karaoke, ping-pong and arcade games, next to the Quarter Market food hall. Westpost's tenant roster could not be verified, so it is named here and nothing more.
Golf in Arlington is private, worth knowing before you plan around it. Washington Golf and Country Club, founded in 1894 and described as the first private country club in Virginia, plays 18 holes at par 71 over a layout Donald Ross redesigned in 1919. Army Navy Country Club is also members-only, with 54 holes of championship golf across its Arlington and Fairfax campuses; the Arlington nines combine into the Blue/Red and White/Blue courses. Open to anyone: MedStar Capitals Iceplex, two NHL-size sheets on the eighth floor above the garage adjoining Ballston Quarter, reported as the highest ice rink above street level in the United States. It is the Washington Capitals' practice facility, runs public skating, learn-to-skate, adult pickup and leagues, and opens Capitals practices to the public free of charge. Long Bridge Park covers more than 36 acres and holds the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center at 333 Long Bridge Drive — 92,000 square feet, Arlington's only 50-meter pool, and three levels of diving towers. Upton Hill Regional Park, 6060 Wilson Boulevard, has mini golf, batting cages, the Ocean Dunes waterpark and Climb UPton, which NOVA Parks calls the largest ropes course in the Mid-Atlantic at 90 elements.
Signature Theatre, the Tony Award-winning company at 4200 Campbell Avenue in Shirlington, has its 2026–27 season on sale, with subscription packages from three shows up to all seven. Ambar at 2901 Wilson Boulevard in Clarendon serves contemporary Balkan small plates, is recognized in the Michelin Guide, and runs 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. midweek with later closes Friday and Saturday. Santé, the Mediterranean room inside the Ritz-Carlton at 1250 South Hayes Street, serves from 6:30 a.m. to midnight and to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Ruthie's All-Day at 3411 5th Street South opens a breakfast counter at 7 a.m. on weekdays and runs lunch, dinner and weekend brunch from 9. Four venues a guide like this would normally list — the Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse, AMC Shirlington 7, Texas Jack's Barbecue and Cafe Colline — are absent because their own sites would not confirm current trading when checked. That is a statement about what could be verified, not a claim that anything has closed.
Access is the part guides get wrong. Theodore Roosevelt Island can only be entered by car from the northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway — there is no southbound turn, and cars left on the grass are ticketed. On foot it is a 10-to-15-minute walk from Rosslyn Metro toward Key Bridge, then down the connector on the downstream side and across the parkway; bicycles are not permitted on the island itself, though there are racks at the footbridge. Columbia Island Marina sits on the Virginia bank off the same parkway, about a mile and a half north of Reagan National on the Pentagon Lagoon: 384 slips for powerboats from 15 to 50 feet, single kayaks rented by the hour Friday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the last boat out at 6, free parking, and the Island Time Bar & Grill on site. The Fashion Centre is the rare mall reachable without driving at all, joined to its own Metro station. Signature Theatre describes itself as ten minutes from downtown Washington — read that as the theater's own estimate, not a promise at 7 p.m. on a Friday.
