Everything below was checked in August 2026 against the park authority, the landlord directory or the venue’s own site, and where something has shut, it says so. Friendship Heights has lost three department stores since 2020 and both its grocery anchors since January.
The largest amenity here is federal land. Rock Creek Park is 1,754 acres administered by the National Park Service, authorized by Congress in 1890 as the third national park the federal government designated, and Chevy Chase, DC is bounded on its east side by it. It is deciduous forest and meadow rather than lawn — about 180 bird species are recorded inside it — and it carries roughly 20 miles of bike trail along with bridle paths and Civil War earthworks. The detail that changes how you use it: stretches of Beach Drive close to motor vehicles on weekends and holidays, which turns a parkway into a long, flat, car-free surface for a Saturday ride. North of Western Avenue the same stream valley continues as Montgomery Parks land, so the green corridor does not stop at the state line.
Three Montgomery Parks properties do the day-to-day work. Meadowbrook Local Park, 7901 Meadowbrook Lane, is 16.6 acres just south of East-West Highway and pressed against Rock Creek Park: five softball fields, a lighted baseball field, four lighted tennis courts, tennis walls, lighted basketball courts, football and soccer overlay fields, a playground, picnic shelters with grills, and a rentable activity building. Norwood Local Park, 4700 Norwood Drive, holds two playgrounds, five tennis courts, lighted basketball courts, two softball fields and a soccer and football overlay field; Montgomery Parks publishes no acreage for it, so none is given here. Chevy Chase Local Park, 3315 Shepherd Street, is the small one — 3.1 acres, acquired by the M-NCPPC in 1948 — with a baseball field, basketball court, playground, one tennis court and a tennis wall. All three run sunrise to sunset; lighted courts close at 11 p.m.
The Rock Creek Hiker-Biker Trail is the everyday one: a paved Montgomery Parks path that leaves the District line and follows the stream valley north to Lake Needwood in Rock Creek Regional Park, where rowboats, pedal boats and canoes rent in season. Published lengths differ by where the count starts — about 14.5 miles from Lake Needwood to the DC boundary, about 18.6 miles for the full asphalt run — so treat any single figure with suspicion. The Capital Crescent Trail is 11 miles from Georgetown to Silver Spring, roughly 3.5 of them in Montgomery County. Be careful with this one as of August 2026: the Montgomery Parks trail page still warns that numerous sections and entrances are closed for Purple Line construction, with interim routes east of Bethesda. The rebuild will lay a 12-foot paved trail along the Georgetown Branch right-of-way past Chevy Chase Lake. Call Montgomery Parks at 301-495-2595 before planning a through ride.
Meadowbrook Stables sits at 8200 Meadowbrook Lane, inside the park, run in a public-private partnership with Montgomery Parks. Established in 1934, it is one of the oldest urban equestrian facilities in the United States and a full-service hunter/jumper barn — hunters, hunt seat equitation and jumpers, lessons from age six through adult, plus boarding, leasing, summer camp and a show schedule. It is not a membership club; you book, and the office runs Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Golf here is largely private, worth knowing before you plan around it: Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase is private, founded 1909, its 18-hole course opened in 1911 and redesigned by Donald Ross in 1915. Public golf on the DC side is not currently an option — Rock Creek Park Golf Course, at 16th and Rittenhouse Streets NW, is under construction, and National Links Trust, which took a new long-term lease on May 8, 2026, anticipates reopening at least nine holes next spring in a modified routing.
The Shops at Wisconsin Place is the anchored end — Bloomingdale’s at 5300 Western Avenue and Whole Foods Market at 4420 Willard Avenue, open since May 2010 and running 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with Talbots, Eileen Fisher, J.Jill and Tabandeh along 5320 and 5330 Western. Across Wisconsin, The Collection at Chevy Chase, 5471 Wisconsin Avenue, is the luxury and design row: Tiffany & Co. at 5481 Wisconsin, the furniture house Giorgetti, a Porsche Studio, DePandi, the Sareh Nouri bridal flagship salon and Whyte House Monograms, with Le Creuset coming soon. On the DC side the old Mazza Gallerie was demolished in March 2023 for a seven-story 3XN-designed building with 320 apartments and 90,000 square feet of retail that keeps the below-grade concourse and its Metro entrance; T.J. Maxx has returned to it at 5300 B Wisconsin Avenue NW. Chevy Chase Pavilion’s interior mall closed in 2020, but Trader Joe’s holds 5335 Wisconsin Avenue NW. Add Total Wine & More at 5401 44th Street NW, plus Roche Bobois, Ferguson and Kellogg Collection in the design cluster at 5215–5301 Wisconsin. What is gone: Saks Fifth Avenue at 5555 Wisconsin, shut by the end of May 2026 in Saks Global’s Chapter 11 restructuring.
On the Connecticut Avenue side, Chevy Chase Lake opened in October 2023 with about 100,000 square feet of retail and has since reported full lease-up. Confirmed there: Elena James, Playa Bowls, the wine shop Uncorked, a CVS, and Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream, which replaced the Charmery after it closed in June 2025. One caveat: the Amazon Fresh anchoring the center closed in January 2026 with every Montgomery County location, leaving the grocery box empty. Three restaurants confirmed open on their own sites this month: Clyde’s of Chevy Chase, 5441 Wisconsin Avenue, serving to midnight and to 1 a.m. weekends; Sushiko at 5455 Wisconsin, 5–9 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday; and La Ferme, the French dining room at 7101 Brookville Road in Chevy Chase Village. The Avalon Theatre at 5612 Connecticut Avenue NW is Washington’s nonprofit film center, showing films since 1923, with a September 2026 calendar posted; Politics and Prose still lists 5015 Connecticut Avenue NW. Friendship Heights Metro at 5337 Wisconsin Avenue NW puts Wisconsin Place, The Collection and the Pavilion within a short walk of the fare gates. Connecticut Avenue — Maryland 185 — runs north from Chevy Chase Circle to Chevy Chase Lake; East-West Highway, Maryland 410, takes you east to Meadowbrook Lane, and from there the Rock Creek trail is the way in on foot.
