Parks, trails, shops and clubs around Middleburg — every venue checked open in August 2026
This is the counterpart to the Middleburg community guide, which deals in zoning, easements, wells and septic permits. This one deals in what is open. Every venue below was checked against its own website or a current public source in August 2026, and anything that could not be confirmed trading was left out — including one long-standing Washington Street shop that has closed. Public land carries most of the weight here for the reason it always should: a 1,860-acre state park does not go out of business. Distances run from the Route 50 crossroads in the middle of town.
Sky Meadows State Park covers 1,860 acres outside Delaplane, reached on Route 50 west through Upperville and Paris, then Route 17 south; the entrance sits less than two miles below Paris, roughly half an hour out. Inside are 22 miles of hiking trail, 10.5 miles of bridle trail and 9 miles of bike trail, and about three miles of the Appalachian Trail run through the park — from there Harpers Ferry is a three-day walk. It is an International Dark Sky Park and keeps the Mount Bleak house. As of August 2026 the gates were open daily 8 a.m. to dusk, the visitor center 10-4 Monday to Thursday and 10-6 Friday to Sunday, with overnight and backcountry sites bookable. Further along the same ridge, the G. Richard Thompson Wildlife Management Area runs to nearly 4,000 acres in two parcels near Linden, carrying seven miles of the Appalachian Trail along the crest and a large-flowered trillium display at the higher elevations each spring. It is a Virginia DWR area, so hunting seasons apply.
Mickie Gordon Memorial Park is the county park closest to town — nearly 100 acres at 23229 Carters Farm Lane, off Route 50 at Route 627, a few minutes east. It has baseball and softball fields, a cricket field, tennis courts, restrooms, a fishing pond, free parking and a pavilion you can rent. A concept plan the Loudoun Board of Supervisors approved in October 2024 returns Pop Gordon Field to baseball and adds nature trails, pickleball and a dog park. In town, the Middleburg Community Center occupies five acres at 300 West Washington Street: an outdoor pool, two playgrounds, a ball field, picnic grounds and a walled herb garden, all within walking distance of the shops. Eight miles east, where Route 50 meets Route 15, Gilbert's Corner Regional Park protects 156 acres — the Eliza Davis Bluebird Trail across open grass, a wooded loop, signage on the 1863 Battle of Aldie and a long view to the Bull Run Mountains. NOVA Parks owns 86 of those acres under a Virginia Outdoors Foundation easement recorded in 2018; the Piedmont Environmental Council owns the balance and leases it in.
The Washington & Old Dominion Trail ends at Purcellville, about a dozen miles north and the nearest place to join it; from there it runs 45 paved miles to Shirlington in Arlington, with a separate 32-mile gravel horse trail alongside much of it. South-east, past Route 15 toward I-66, the Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve is 2,486 acres owned and managed by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation; roughly eight miles of trail are open on the southern end, Friday through Sunday only, with the central and northern sections reachable only on VOF-led guided walks. The nearest open water is Reservoir Park in Ashburn, about 25 miles east at 22211 Water Vista Drive — a Loudoun Water and NOVA Parks partnership around the 300-acre Beaverdam Reservoir, opened to the public on 21 October 2024. Trails are open dawn to dusk daily, and kayaks and stand-up paddleboards rent first-come, first-served on a seasonal marina schedule of roughly March through October, running 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily from 1 June to 16 August.
Middleburg's retail is a walkable strip of Washington Street, under a mile end to end. Tenants confirmed on the town's own visitor directory in August 2026 include Highcliffe Clothiers at 112 West Washington Street — a custom and tailored clothier that moved out from Washington, D.C. in 2007 and stocks Alden and R.M. Williams footwear, open Monday to Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 12-5; Tom Beckbe at 2 West Washington Street for waxed-canvas field coats and sporting gear; Tully Rector on East Washington Street; and Middleburg Books at 17 South Madison Street, open Monday to Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 11-5. Also listed: The Tack Box, Tri-County Feeds Fashions & Finds, Crème de la Crème, Lou Lou Boutiques, Zest Clothing & Co., Country Classics, The Christmas Sleigh and the Artists in Middleburg gallery. One correction worth printing: The Fun Shop at 117 West Washington Street is closed and no longer appears in the directory. For outlet volume the drive is east — Leesburg Premium Outlets, a Simon centre with more than 100 stores, roughly 20 miles away via Route 50 and Route 15 north.
Golf here is largely private, which is useful to know before planning a round. Creighton Farms, at 22050 Creighton Farms Drive in Aldie between Middleburg and Leesburg, is a private club community on 900 acres built around an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature course, with a golf performance centre, a two-tier pool complex, a fitness centre, hard and clay tennis courts and pickleball. Stoneleigh Golf & Country Club at 35271 Prestwick Court in Round Hill is also private: 18 holes, established 1991. The nearest daily-fee 18 is Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club at 41601 Raspberry Drive north of Leesburg, a 1996 Gary Player Design course booking tee times online. Racquets run through the member-owned Middleburg Tennis Club at 1777 Zulla Road, on about ten acres just outside the town centre: five indoor courts, six outdoor Har-Tru clay, one hard court with a hitting wall, two pickleball courts, a pool, a fitness room and a restaurant. Membership is required, and admission runs through a member nomination and a seven-day posting under the bylaws. Salamander Middleburg's 25-acre equestrian centre keeps a 14,000-square-foot stable with 22 stalls, nine paddocks and a ThorTurf outdoor arena; guided trail rides are open to riders aged 10 and up, from $180 a person with a 220-pound weight limit as of August 2026.
Great Meadow, at 5089 Old Tavern Road in The Plains, is a 374-acre field events centre about a dozen miles south and the permanent home of the Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase. Great Meadow Polo runs an arena series on Saturday evenings from May into November, and the National Sporting Library & Museum's Polo Classic is set there for Sunday 13 September 2026. In town, two dining rooms were confirmed open and taking bookings. The Red Fox Inn & Tavern at 2 East Washington Street, established 1728, was serving dinner Monday through Saturday and closed Sundays, with 22 guest rooms above the tavern. King Street Oyster Bar at 1 East Washington Street, (540) 883-3156, was open Sunday to Wednesday 11-9, Thursday to 9:30 and Friday and Saturday to 10:30, with Sunday brunch 11-2 and a daily happy hour 3-6:30. The Middleburg Film Festival returns 15-18 October 2026, screening around the town, about thirty minutes from Dulles. Hours, prices and tenants move. The trail mileage does not.
