Schools Serving Vienna

Which schools serve a Vienna address, where the lines fall block by block, and how to confirm it yourself

Every address in and around Vienna is served by Fairfax County Public Schools. The incorporated town sits almost entirely in the Madison High School pyramid, but the Vienna mailing area is far larger than the town's 4.4 square miles and reaches into four other high school boundaries. This page names the schools that serve Vienna as of August 2026, gives the specific blocks where the assignment changes, and points you at the district's own address locator, which is the only authority that counts. Every assignment below was looked up address by address in that locator in August 2026 for the 2026-27 school year. The page does not rate, rank or compare any school; the last section says plainly why.

The schools that serve Vienna

Fairfax County organises its schools into high school pyramids — one high school, the middle school feeding it, and the elementary schools feeding that. The grade structure surprises newcomers: elementary runs kindergarten through grade six, middle school is grades seven and eight only, high school nine through twelve. Addresses checked in the FCPS Boundary Locator in August 2026, for school year 2026-27, returned four elementary schools inside the incorporated town: Vienna Elementary, 128 Center Street S, for the Church Street and Center Street core and southeast toward Follin Lane; Louise Archer, 324 Nutley Street NW, for the northwest including Lawyers Road; Marshall Road, 730 Marshall Road SW, for the southwest including Meadow Lane and Kingsley Road; and Cunningham Park, 1001 Park Street SE, for the southeast around Tapawingo Road. Just past the town line, Wolftrap Elementary covers the Beulah Road and Clarks Crossing corridor, Flint Hill covers Flint Hill Road and James Madison Drive, and Oakton Elementary reaches Hunter Mill Road. Every one fed Thoreau Middle School, 2505 Cedar Lane, and then Madison High School, 2500 James Madison Drive.

Where the lines run, block by block

A Vienna mailing address is not one school zone: the ZIPs spill past the town line, and five high schools sit inside them. Maple Avenue East, the main street through town, is itself a line. The 200 block returned Vienna Elementary, Thoreau Middle and Madison High, while the 800, 900 and 1100 blocks returned Westbriar Elementary and Kilmer Middle — both Marshall pyramid schools — and still Madison High. The elementary and middle school change; the high school does not. Cedar Lane is the sharpest stretch in the area: the 2400 block returned Cunningham Park, Thoreau and Madison; the 2300 block Stenwood, Kilmer and Marshall High; 2505 Cunningham Park and Thoreau but Marshall High; and the 2800 through 3000 blocks Fairhill Elementary, Jackson Middle and Falls Church High — four high schools along a mile and a half of one road. Trap Road, at Wolf Trap National Park, divides Madison from Langley: the 1600 block returned Wolftrap, Thoreau and Madison, the 1400 block Colvin Run, Cooper Middle and Langley High. On Chain Bridge Road the 2000 block returned Westbriar, Kilmer and Marshall, the 3000 block Oakton Elementary, Thoreau and Oakton High. South of town, Blake Lane, Sutton Road and Five Oaks Road returned Mosaic Elementary, Thoreau and Oakton High. So Thoreau feeds both Madison and Oakton, and Kilmer both Madison and Marshall: the middle school does not tell you the high school.

How Fairfax County actually assigns a student

Assignment is by residence address to a base school, which is what the locator returns. Three things sit alongside it. Advanced Academic Program centres are assigned separately and do not track the base school: in August 2026 a Center Street S address returned Louise Archer as its elementary centre and Jackson Middle as its middle one, a Marshall Road SW address returned Mosaic and Jackson, a Beulah Road address Louise Archer and Kilmer, and a Hunter Mill Road address Sunrise Valley and Jackson. Centres serve grades three through eight and turn on an eligibility screening, not on where you buy; the AAP office answers on 571-423-4740. Second, Dual Language Immersion, run by lottery. No Vienna-area school hosted a programme as of August 2026, FCPS does not bus students to an immersion school outside their own attendance area, and a student already enrolled continues automatically through a boundary change. Third, student transfers, granted for listed reasons and subject to capacity. None of the three substitutes for the boundary. One change is pending: on 25 September 2025 the School Board directed a plan, by March 2026, for AAP centres in every middle school.

What changed in 2026, and what is still open

On 22 January 2026 the Fairfax County School Board voted 8-3 to approve its first comprehensive boundary review in roughly four decades. The changes took effect with the 2026-27 school year, which began on 24 August 2026; the locator, refreshed each July, now returns them. Locally the review kept Town of Vienna students at Madison and moved much of the Wolf Trap area and one Dunn Loring area from Marshall to Madison, ending the split feeders at Wolftrap and Vienna elementary schools. Changes also phase in: under School Board Policy 8130, Section VII, a new elementary boundary is mandatory for rising kindergarten through grade four in a K-6 school while grades five and six may stay, and new middle and high school boundaries bind only the incoming seventh and ninth grades. One local split was not resolved. Westbriar still feeds two high schools, and FCPS's Looking Ahead page names the Tysons Green community, offering a space-available priority transfer to Madison from autumn 2026 for high school students only, who must provide their own transportation; there is no equivalent Thoreau option. FCPS has also flagged Briarwood Trace and Briarwood Farms for review in about two years, once Skyview High School's opening shows in Oakton's enrolment. Six other areas report by January 2027, none in these four pyramids.

What to do before you write an offer

Check the specific address, not the neighbourhood or the ZIP code. In the locator, enter the house number and the street name without the street type — “Cedar”, not “Cedar Ln” — then confirm the matched address on the next screen. It returns the assigned elementary, middle and high school, the AAP centres and the magisterial district. FCPS states plainly that it makes no guarantee an address will continue to be served by the same schools. Treat a listing's school field as unverified: it is typed by whoever entered the listing, neither the MLS nor FCPS audits it, and it goes stale the moment a boundary moves. Save the result with its date, and run it again before you remove contingencies. If a student in the household is mid-phase-in, ask which school they attend now, because that may not be the school the address is assigned to. New construction is often not yet in the system; Facilities Planning Services takes those questions at 571-423-2320.

What this page will not do

It will not rate, rank, score or compare any school, and it links to no rating source. That is a deliberate posture, not an omission. Rating products track neighbourhood demographics closely, and steering buyers toward or away from areas on the basis of school quality is among the most documented fair housing violations there is. Which school serves an address is a public, verifiable fact, and a broker can give you facts. Whether a school suits a particular student is a judgment for you to make — by visiting it, talking to its administration, and reading what the school, the division and the Virginia Department of Education publish. Before You Offer

Confirm the assignment for a specific address

School assignment turns on the address, not the neighbourhood, and a listing's school field is unverified. Artur can confirm it against the district record before you write.
