Bethesda addresses fall into three MCPS high school clusters, and the dividing lines run through the middle of the place — not around it. Here is who serves what, and how to confirm it yourself.
A listing sheet's school field is unverified data typed by whoever entered the listing. Montgomery County Public Schools assigns by address, not by neighborhood name or ZIP code, and three separate high school attendance areas reach addresses that say Bethesda, Maryland. This page names the schools and describes where the lines run as of August 2026, then points you at the district's own locator, which is the only current authority. We name schools; we do not rate, rank or compare them.

The Walt Whitman cluster covers the western side: Bannockburn, Bradley Hills, Burning Tree, Carderock Springs and Wood Acres elementary schools, all articulating to a single middle school, Thomas W. Pyle, and then to Walt Whitman High School. The Bethesda-Chevy Chase cluster covers downtown and the east: Bethesda, Somerset and Westbrook elementary schools carry most Bethesda addresses, with Chevy Chase, North Chevy Chase, Rock Creek Forest and Rosemary Hills also in the cluster; the middle schools are Westland and Silver Creek, and the high school is Bethesda-Chevy Chase. The Walter Johnson cluster covers the north: Wyngate and Ashburton elementary schools reach Bethesda addresses, while Farmland, Garrett Park, Kensington Parkwood and Luxmanor sit farther out; the middle schools are North Bethesda and Tilden, and the high school is Walter Johnson. Far west of Bradley Boulevard the Winston Churchill cluster begins, and that edge is irregular.
The Whitman/Bethesda-Chevy Chase divide is the one that decides the most, and it does not follow Wisconsin Avenue. It runs roughly north and south about half a mile west of Wisconsin, so all of downtown — Bethesda Row, Woodmont Triangle, Edgemoor — sits in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase cluster, while Bradley Hills a few blocks west sits in Whitman. Working from the south, the line runs near the Capital Crescent Trail corridor above Brookmont, crosses Massachusetts Avenue around Sumner, crosses River Road at Westbard, passes Glenbrook Road, and above downtown follows the line of Old Georgetown Road. Around Sumner and Westbard it is not a single clean street: it doubles back, and adjacent blocks can land on opposite sides. Downtown also splits at elementary level — the Somerset and Bethesda elementary line crosses Wisconsin Avenue a few blocks south of the Metro station. At the north end, Greentree Road carries most of the Whitman/Walter Johnson divide, which then jumps to the Capital Beltway west of Old Georgetown Road; on the Wisconsin Avenue side the Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Walter Johnson line crosses near Cedar Lane. These descriptions come from the county's published MCPS boundary layer, checked August 2026; that layer was still labeled 2024–25, which is exactly why the locator, not this page, is the authority.
Default assignment is geographic and articulated: your address puts you in an elementary service area, that elementary feeds a named middle school, and that middle school feeds the cluster high school. Two things complicate the default. First, a paired arrangement. In the band east of Wisconsin Avenue north of downtown, the elementary assignment is split by grade — Rosemary Hills Elementary for kindergarten through grade 2, then North Chevy Chase Elementary for grades 3 through 5 — and the middle school there is Silver Creek rather than Westland. The county's data flags those areas as paired, so one address produces two elementary school names. Second, choice programs can override the default. Rock Creek Forest Elementary in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase cluster runs a Spanish immersion program admitted by countywide lottery, not by address; for 2026–27 the application window ran February 2 to April 10, 2026, and Westland Middle School carries the Spanish continuation. Separately, MCPS runs an annual Change of School Assignment process under Board Policy JEE for transfers out of the home school, submitted through ParentVue; the 2026–27 window closed April 7, 2026, approval turns on documented hardship rather than preference, and an approved family provides its own transportation.
On March 26, 2026 the Board of Education voted 7-1 to adopt a package of boundary and program changes: reopening Charles W. Woodward High School at 11211 Old Georgetown Road in Rockville and expanding Northwood High School; relocating Thomas S. Wootton High School to the Crown Farm site and expanding Damascus; and adopting a regional programming model that divides the district into six regions of four to five clusters each, meant to even out access to secondary programs. The buildings are targeted at the 2027–28 school year. The phase-in is staged rather than immediate: grades 9–10 and 6–7 move under the new boundaries in 2027–28, with rising eighth and eleventh graders following in 2028–29 and twelfth graders in 2029–30, so a household can hold two different assignments at once during the transition. The Woodward study re-examined Walt Whitman, Bethesda-Chevy Chase and Walter Johnson along with five other high schools and their feeder middle schools; in the option sets released in October 2025 the Whitman and Bethesda-Chevy Chase attendance areas were left unchanged while Walter Johnson's shifted. Treat the adopted maps, not the option-stage reporting, as controlling, and check them for the specific address.
Run the exact street address through the MCPS School Assignment Tool below, and run it again close to ratification if the contract is weeks out. Do not rely on the neighborhood, the subdivision name or the ZIP code: Bethesda mailing addresses span three clusters, and in Westbard, Sumner and the blocks west of downtown the line falls between neighbors. Do not rely on the school field in the listing either — it is entered by hand, is not verified by the district, and is not a representation you can enforce. If the tool's answer is ambiguous because the address is new construction, a recent subdivision or sits on a service-area edge, MCPS asks you to confirm directly, at (240) 740-7725 or BoundaryInquiries@mcpsmd.org. Then check whether the address falls inside an area affected by the adopted Woodward boundaries, because the assignment that applies at settlement may not be the one that applies in 2027–28. Boundaries change, and the locator is what stays current. One last thing on posture: naming the school that serves an address is a factual question and we will answer it. Judging or comparing schools is not something a licensed broker should be doing, and we do not.
